Area in the Republic of South Africa set
aside for development towards self-government
by black Africans in accordance with
apartheid. Before 1980 these areas were known
as black homelands or bantustans. They make
up less than 14% of the country and tend to
be in arid areas (though some have mineral
wealth), and may be in scattered blocks.
Those that have so far achieved nominal
independence are Transkei 1976,
Bophuthatswana 1977, Venda 1979, and
Ciskei 1981. They are not recognized outside
South Africa because of their racial basis.
11 million blacks live permanently in the
country's white-designated areas.
